How NOT To Do Content Marketing

People are catching on that content marketing is vital if you want Google to pay attention to your site and reward you with rankings. According to the Content Marketing Institute, 93% of B2B marketers will use content marketing in their marketing strategy. With all those digital marketers using content as a marketing strategy, there are bound to be some who need to remember that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Below are some of the things you should NOT do with your content marketing efforts:

  • Be a Narcissist: Yes, you know that you are awesome, but if you have to tell your audience that over and over, you become “that guy”– you know, the one no one can stand because all they do is talk about themselves. Engage your audience by offering information you think they will find educational. Ask them questions about particular matters. If your content is constantly a sales message, you will just look pathetic, desperate, and boring.
  • Don’t Get to Know Your Audience: Let’s say that you sell spatulas–amazing spatulas that even Spongebob would use at the Krusty Krab. Then why are you posting social media posts about flowers or blogging about who got snubbed at the Academy Awards? Speak to your audience about things your AUDIENCE cares about, not you. Give them a reason to stay loyal to your content and to come back for more in the future.
  • Allow Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen: There are things that you can blog about or post on social media that are time sensitive. With such as short shelf life, if a piece of content has to be seen and approved by a band of people, you run the risk of posting stale content. Try to figure out who REALLY needs to see the content, and assign a hard deadline. Do not let content languish–use it or lose it!

And the last thing you should not be doing is have content that sucks. Seems simple enough, but we have all seen it. If you want to lose clout with your audience, make sure your content is riddled with typos or other grammatical errors. If you can’t even write well, then why should your audience invest in your products? Exactly. If you need help with your content marketing efforts, we are just a click away.
